Diploma in Registered General Nursing

The College has adapted the curriculum of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana, based on the Semester Course Unit System published in October 2015. This is in view of the fact that students of the programme upon completion of the six semesters are required to write licensure examination based on the Registered General Nursing curriculum, to become eligible to be registered in the Council’s Nursing Register.

The Nursing programme at the College started late 2015 under the mentorship of University for Development Studies with an initial enrolment of 27.Current student population for the 2017-2017 academic year is 12.The greatest challenge facing the programme is consistent yearly decline in enrolment for the past three years. The reasons are mainly due to external factors which among others include the re-introduction of nursing trainee allowance to public institutions and a backlog of graduates from private training institutions yet to be absorbed by the Ghana Health Service.

The College holds the view that health is a fundamental human right of all communities, families, groups of people and individuals, irrespective of their race, sex, religion, creed, beliefs and values. Health therefore is the purpose of all nursing behaviours. The attainment of health involves delivery of health care that integrates conservative, curative and rehabilitative health measures at all levels.

The College is committed to quality teaching to incorporate flexible modes of delivery involving a range of resources and technology in order to facilitate effective student learning. It also has a collaborative team-teaching, student centred and problem-based learning approach to deliver the programme.

The nursing programme of the College is a dynamic interpersonal process which seeks to promote, maintain and restore reproductive health. In view of this it is training practitioners to acquire skills in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating reproductive health issues. Since nursing is essentially a practice-based activity whose body of knowledge is grounded in the biological, physical and social sciences, trainees are trained to acquire continuous learning and research to support theory and practice.

The nursing education at the College is preparing graduates to be responsible and well informed in modern nursing practices through the acquisition and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes which aims at creating a dynamic learning environment, student-centred and a disciplined process to encourage the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as prompting direction and self-responsibility of students.

The nurse trainee is to offer reproductive health to clients to accept and practice family planning. They are equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes to deal with reproductive health needs and problems, and promote the general health of the adolescents. The purpose of nursing education is aimed at positive personality development whilst enabling the nurse to obtain a qualification which provides eligibility for registration and licensing by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana to assume the responsibilities and accountability that nursing registration imposes.

The training that the nurses are receiving at the College places them in a position to adapt the roles of a counsellor, leader, resource person, teacher, researcher, manager and care giver, in the reproductive health delivery system. They attend workshops and seminars to enhance their knowledge and skills in order to provide holistic care to clients. The College intends to introduce Gender Studies and Basic Ultrasonography through workshops and seminars as appropriate in the third year of the programme.

SSSCE, WASSCE or Equivalent

Core subjects and minimum grades: Credits (WASSCE A1-C6/ SSSCE A-D) in three (3) subjects, English, Mathematics and Integrated Science.

Elective subjects and minimum grades: Credits (WASSCE A1-C6/ SSSCE A-D) in three (3) elective subjects in the following programmes: General Science, General Arts, Home Economics and Agriculture


SSSCE: An aggregate score of Twenty Four (24) or better.


WASSCE: An aggregate score of Thirty Six (36) or better.
